Jamie Redknapp: 'Eric Dier could one day captain England'

Former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes that Eric Dier's authority, intelligence and mature displays suggest that he has what it takes to captain the Three Lions.

Former England international Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Eric Dier could be a future Three Lions captain.

The 22-year-old Tottenham Hotspur midfielder scored his nation's opener in their Euro 2016 Group B clash with Russia, which finished 1-1 in Marseille.

Redknapp, also formerly of Spurs, told Sky Sports News: "One of the real positives was Eric Dier - I thought he was fantastic and looks like he's getting better and better. If he carries on improving, then he's got that England captaincy look about him. He looks like a captain.

"He's got so much authority in the way that he players and is super bright. Every good thing England did seemed to revolve around him. I was very impressed."

Dier, who grew up in Portugal and turned down the chance of playing for the Iberian nation, has worn the England shirt at every age group from Under-18 level.
