Rickie Lambert "overjoyed" with England role

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert describes his emotions after scoring in his first start for England against Moldova, making it two goals in as many caps for the Three Lions.

England striker Rickie Lambert has insisted that he is ready to lead the line for Roy Hodgson's side if called upon for Tuesday's crunch World Cup qualifier against Ukraine.

Lambert scored in his first start for the Three Lions last night, becoming the first England international to net in his opening two games for 37 years in a 4-0 win over Moldova.

The Southampton forward declared that he will take any on any role Hodgson hands him in Kiev with relish, after Danny Welbeck's yellow card last night ruled him out of action on Tuesday.

He told Sky Sports News: "I obviously wanted to try my best to help the team and I am hoping to give the gaffer another option as a striker.

"That is what I was trying to do, to impress again, and to score a goal again for England is superb. I was overjoyed to get my first start for England and for it to have gone like that again, it is terrific.

"Obviously it is going to be a different game again on Tuesday, we know that, and whatever role is in there for me, I am more than ready for it."

The 31-year-old was joined on the scoresheet against Moldova by Steven Gerrard and Welbeck, who bagged a brace despite the disappointment of that early booking.
