Graham Taylor: 'England are unlucky'

Former England manager Graham Taylor believes that the team is unlucky to be leaving the World Cup so early.

Former England manager Graham Taylor has claimed that the team should count themselves unfortunate to be leaving the World Cup so early.

It was confirmed on Friday that the Three Lions would not be reaching the second round following Costa Rica's surprise win over Italy.

Asked about England's campaign so far, Taylor told Sky Sports News: "In both games England put in a performance that, on any other day, would have got them a result – at least a draw.

"And I think they have been unfortunate. That happens in football, be it the World Cup or League Two. I don't think England played as badly as some people are now making out."

England play their final Group D fixture on Tuesday when they face Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte.
