Ronald Koeman: 'Wayne Rooney an example on and off the field'

Everton manager Ronald Koeman hails the influence Wayne Rooney will have both on and off the field following his return to the club.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has hailed the positive impact Wayne Rooney has had on the club since his return from Manchester United earlier this summer.

The boyhood Evertonian rejoined the Toffees following a trophy-laden and record-breaking 13-year spell at Old Trafford, where he won every trophy available to him and became the club's highest ever goalscorer.

Rooney has already scored twice during pre-season, but Koeman believes that the 31-year-old will prove to be just as important off the pitch as he will be on it.

"We know he is used to winning titles, which is what we want at Everton," he told reporters.

"The confidence in his football is what I like but what I really like is his ambition in training, showing to the young lads his experience and explaining things.

"He is a big player in England and of course young players know everything about Wayne Rooney and he is an example about winning titles and he can be a teacher for young players off the pitch."

Rooney's first competitive match since returning to the club is expected to come when they take on MFK Ruzomberok in a Europa League qualifier tomorrow.
