Lothar Matthaus backs Bastian Schweinsteiger for German captaincy

Lothar Matthaus says that Bastian Schweinsteiger should take over from Phillip Lahm as the new captain of Germany.

Lothar Matthaus has backed Bastian Schweinsteiger to be the next captain of Germany following Philipp Lahm's international retirement.

Following Germany's World Cup win, Lahm has decided to walk away from the national side in order to concentrate on his club football.

His Bayern Munich teammate Schweinsteiger has been tipped by many to be handed the captaincy and Matthaus believes that there is no better player to take on the role.

"You do not need to think twice. I assume that Bastian Schweinsteiger takes over the captaincy, he was also vice captain," Matthaus told Sky Sport News. "Sami Khedira and Manuel Neuer will then move up."

Matthaus is the most-capped German player of all time, having made 150 appearances for the country.
