Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy believes that Tom Lees's red card helped his side beat Leeds United 3-0 in the Championship on Saturday.

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has claimed that Tom Lees's red card helped his side beat Leeds United 3-0 in the Championship on Saturday.

The Leeds defender was sent off with the game goalless at Portman Road on 30 minutes.

Ipswich made the extra man count as two goals from David McGoldrick and a Jay Emmanuel-Thomas strike saw the hosts claim the victory.

"I'm pleased because it's the first time I can remember when we got away with an ordinary performance," McCarthy told Sky Sports News. "Leeds were better than us, certainly for 30 minutes.

"It was our turn to have a bit of good fortune and the red card changed the game. I don't think anyone could argue against it. It was a sending off, in my view."

The win has lifted Ipswich four points clear of the relegation zone in the Championship table.
