Liverpool team news: Injury, suspension list vs. RB Leipzig

Sports Mole rounds up Liverpool's latest injury and suspension news ahead of Tuesday's Champions League last 16 first leg against RB Leipzig.

Liverpool get their Champions League campaign back underway on Tuesday night when they face RB Leipzig in Budapest for the first leg of their last-16 tie.

The six-time champions head into the match, which will be held on neutral territory due to coronavirus restrictions in Germany, looking to put their poor domestic form behind them as they bid to regain the biggest club prize in Europe.

The Reds were beaten 3-1 by Leicester City at the weekend, after which manager Jurgen Klopp conceded the Premier League title, leaving the Champions League as their last realistic route to silverware this season.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up all of Liverpool's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the contest.

Fabinho

Status: Out
Type of injury: Muscle
Possible return date: Unknown

Liverpool's defensive injury crisis deepened further when Fabinho was ruled out of Saturday's defeat to Leicester due to a "little muscle issue". The Brazilian was also absent from Liverpool training ahead of this match, and the nature of his injury coupled with the quick turnaround in fixtures means that he is expected to miss the trip to Hungary.

Ben Davies

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Knock
Possible return date: February 16 (vs. RB Leipzig)

Ben Davies - one of the men signed in January to ease Liverpool's defensive woes - also picked up a knock in training ahead of the Leicester clash, and he is a doubt for the trip too, despite being back in training on Monday.

James Milner

Status: Out
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: Unknown

James Milner lasted just 17 minutes of the Leicester defeat before suffering a hamstring injury which forced him off. Klopp is hopeful that it is nothing serious, but he is almost certain to miss Tuesday's match having not taken part in training this week.

Divock Origi

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: February 16 (vs. RB Leipzig)

Divock Origi joined the injury list last week, with Klopp revealing that he had picked up a hamstring issue prior to the Leicester match. The Belgian was back in training on Monday, but remains a doubt for this game.

Joel Matip

Status: Out
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: Unknown

Joel Matip will miss the rest of the season due to an ankle injury he picked up in January, leaving Liverpool without their top three centre-backs for the majority of the campaign.

Naby Keita

Status: Out
Type of injury: Muscle
Possible return date: February 20 (vs. Everton)

Naby Keita is now back in Liverpool training, but this match against his former club will come too soon for him. There is a chance that he could be in contention for the Merseyside derby at the weekend, which comes more than two months since his last outing.

Diogo Jota

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: February 28 (vs. Sheffield United)

Diogo Jota suffered a knee injury in Liverpool's last Champions League game and has not returned to action since, although there is hope that he will be back before the end of the month.

Joe Gomez

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Joe Gomez is still some way away from returning to first-team action, having suffered a serious knee injury while away with England in November.

Virgil van Dijk

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Klopp has played down growing hope that Virgil van Dijk could return before the end of this season, with the centre-back still working his way back from a knee injury he sustained last year.

Caoimhin Kelleher

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knock
Possible return date: Unknown

While number one keeper Alisson Becker struggles on the field, Liverpool are without backup Caoimhin Kelleher due to a knock which he picked up in training last week.

LIVERPOOL'S SUSPENSION LIST

Liverpool have no players suspended for this match, but a booking for either Milner or Georginio Wijnaldum would see them miss the second leg.
