How Liverpool could line up against Southampton

Sports Mole looks at how Liverpool could line up in Saturday's Premier League clash with Southampton.

Liverpool will be looking to make it back-to-back Premier League wins at the start of the 2019-20 campaign when they travel to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds opened their league season with a 4-1 victory over Norwich City at Anfield last Friday.

Fatigue might well be an issue for Jurgen Klopp's side this weekend, though, following a demanding 120 minutes of football against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night.

The Reds beat Frank Lampard's side 5-4 on penalties to claim more European silverware, but the extra time period was not ideal ahead of a trip to St Mary's.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the Merseyside giants could line up this weekend.

POSS LIV XI vs. SOU

Out: Alisson Becker (calf), Nathaniel Clyne (knee)
Doubtful: Naby Keita (muscle)

Liverpool will again be without the services of first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker due to a calf problem, meaning that Adrian will once more feature between the sticks.

The former West Ham United stopper saved the decisive penalty in the UEFA Super Cup, keeping out Tammy Abraham's attempt to see Klopp's side land another European trophy.

Nathaniel Clyne is Liverpool's only other confirmed absentee, although it seems likely that midfielder Naby Keita will also miss out with the muscular problem that ruled him out of the Chelsea clash.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino were all named on the bench against Chelsea but should come back into the XI for the trip to Southampton.

Sadio Mane, who scored twice against Chelsea, is also expected to start after only being named as a substitute in the team's league opener with Norwich due to fitness concerns.

Perhaps Klopp's main decision will come in central defence, with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip battling to start alongside Virgil van Dijk. The former was named in the XI against Norwich, though, suggesting that the Englishman currently has the shirt despite Matip's impressive performance against Chelsea.
