Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen will reportedly undergo surgery to cure a persistent shoulder problem this week.

Liverpool have decided to bring Joe Allen's surgery on a persistent shoulder complaint forward to maximise his chances of being fit for the start of next season.

Allen has struggled with the problem in recent weeks and was brought off after 45 minutes of Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Southampton.

The 23-year-old pulled out of the Wales squad to face Scotland yesterday and has now been booked for an operation later this week, according to The Mirror.

The Reds had originally planned to manage the injury without immediate surgery, but with Champions League qualification now unlikely the procedure has been rescheduled.

In a recent interview when asked about his troublesome shoulder Allen said: "It is something that needs sorting out.

"I had an operation a few years ago and unfortunately it is a recurrence. It has slowly deteriorated to the point where an operation is the only thing that can solve it.

"Obviously, I don't want to miss the start of next season, because it is a reasonably long lay-off."

After being signed by Brendan Rodgers in July the Welsh playmaker has made 37 appearances in his debut season at Anfield.
