Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard joked that Jamie Carragher borrowed his boots after the defender rattled the woodwork during their 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League today.
Carragher retired after the game and nearly marked his 737th appearance with a sensational goal when he struck a fierce shot that hit the bar.
"I think he lent my boots because I'm not playing; either my boots or one of the [other] lads," Gerrard told the club's official website.
"We haven't seen that for 20 years, have we? It would have been a fitting point for him to finish - he scored on his debut - and what an effort.
"I certainly share the emotion with the supporters. The club have put a fantastic show on for Jamie today and the guard of honour was emotional because you know it's going to be the last time we'll ever see him perform."
Carragher made his Liverpool debut in 1997.
