Mauricio Pochettino: 'We neutralised Liverpool threat'

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino believes that his side's ability to keep Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho quiet was a key factor in their 3-1 win over Liverpool today.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has praised his side for neutralising Liverpool's key players during their 3-1 win over the Reds this afternoon.

The likes of Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho failed to produce their best throughout the match as Southampton dominated for large periods.

Pochettino believes that their ability to keep that trio under wraps was key to their success and shows that his tactical decisions are working.

"I think we set out the game in a very positive way," he said.

"Most importantly the players believed in the way we set up. I think we made Liverpool really uncomfortable on the pitch. We pressed them quite a lot and we put in a really big effort.

"That's the way that we want to play. We wanted to play really high up the field in their half. We knew that their attacking prowess is based on the threat of Gerrard, Suarez and Coutinho and we neutralised that threat. I think today my team played really well."

The result lifts Southampton up to 15th in the Premier League table, seven points clear of the relegation zone.
