Liverpool expiring contracts: Who is free to leave this summer and next?

Sports Mole rounds up all of Liverpool's expiring contracts for this season and next.

While Jurgen Klopp lapped up most of the fanfare as he took his Liverpool leave, some attention turned to the Reds players who would not be continuing their careers under Arne Slot.

All of Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Adrian departed the club when their contracts expired at the end of June 2024, while Fabio Carvalho, Bobby Clark and Sepp van den Berg also left permanently.

It was mostly quiet on the incomings front, with Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili representing the Reds' only two arrivals in the summer 2024 window, as sporting director Richard Hughes prioritised some uncertain contract situations.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at the Liverpool players whose contracts either expire at the end of June 2025, or in the summer of 2026.

Which Liverpool players are out of contract in the summer of 2025?

Vitezslav Jaros

Honours

  • Austrian Bundesliga (1): 2023-24

  • Austrian Cup (1): 2023-24

  • Irish Cup (1): 2020-21

  • Officially promoted to Liverpool's senior ranks in 2024, goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros could leave for nothing in 2025, and it is not clear what the future has in store for the Czech shot-stopper.

    Mohamed Salah

    Position: Winger
    Transfer value: £47m

    Liverpool appearances: 368
    Liverpool goals: 223

    Honours

  • Premier League (1): 2019-20

  • FA Cup (1): 2021-22

  • EFL Cup (3): 2014-15, 2021-22, 2023-24

  • Community Shield (1): 2022

  • Champions League (1): 2018-19

  • UEFA Super Cup (1): 2019

  • Club World Cup (1): 2019-20

  • Swiss Super League (2): 2012-13, 2013-14

  • Barely a month goes by without a new story on the future of Mohamed Salah, who could walk away from the Reds for nothing in 2025 and saw his future plunged into even more uncertainty during his touchline row with Klopp.

The Egypt international recently claimed that he was "more out than in" of the club, although that appeared to be a 'get on with it' message to the board, and he is thought to be keen to stay on for a little while longer.

    Virgil van Dijk

    Age: 33
    Position: Centre-back
    Transfer value: £25.7m

  • Community Shield (1): 2022

  • Champions League (1): 2018-19

  • UEFA Super Cup (1): 2019

  • Club World Cup (1): 2019-20

  • Scottish Premiership (2): 2013-14, 2014-15

  • Scottish League Cup (1): 2014-15

  • Another fundamental Liverpool cog out of contract in 2025, Van Dijk added fuel to the fire surrounding his future when he admitted that he did not know what would lie in store after Klopp's exit.

The Dutchman has since clarified his comments, though, and the Reds are planning for life with Van Dijk donning the captain's armband for the coming months, with the possibility of an extension being announced imminently too.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold

    Age: 26
    Position: Right-back
    Transfer value: £59.8m

    Liverpool appearances: 326
    Liverpool goals: 19

    Honours

  • Premier League (1): 2019-20

  • FA Cup (1): 2021-22

  • EFL Cup (2): 2021-22, 2023-24

  • Community Shield (1): 2022

  • Champions League (1): 2018-19

  • UEFA Super Cup (1): 2019

  • Club World Cup (1): 2019-20

  • Trent Alexander-Arnold's contract now has a little under 12 months to run too, and the right-back - also capable of doing a job in midfield - is thought to have attracted the attention of Real Madrid.

There are growing doubts about the defender's future, but Liverpool are confident that a renewal will go through without a hitch, especially after his latest admission over his future.

    Nat Phillips

    Age: 27
    Position: Centre-back
    Transfer value: £3m
    Joined: August 1, 2016
    Joining fee: Free
    Liverpool appearances: 29
    Liverpool goals: 1

    Honours

  • Premier League (1): 2019-20

  • EFL Cup (1): 2021-22

  • Scottish Premiership (1): 2023-24

  • Alongside Rhys Williams, Nat Phillips excelled as an emergency centre-back in the 2020-21 season but has failed to kick on since, enduring loan spells elsewhere with mixed success.

The defender is now on loan at Derby County, which could precede an exit on a free transfer in 2025.

Which Liverpool players are out of contract in the summer of 2026?

    Ibrahima Konate

    Honours

  • FA Cup (1): 2021-22

  • EFL Cup (2): 2021-22, 2023-24

  • Community Shield (1): 2022

  • Amid a spate of niggling injuries, Ibrahima Konate has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with in the Liverpool backline over the past three years and will surely be rewarded with fresh terms before he enters the last year of his agreement.

    Andrew Robertson

    Age: 30
    Position: Left-back
    Transfer value: £25.5m
    Joined: Jul 21, 2017

    Liverpool appearances: 314
    Liverpool goals: 11

    Honours

  • Premier League (1): 2019-20

  • FA Cup (1): 2021-22

  • EFL Cup (2): 2021-22, 2023-24

  • Community Shield (1): 2022

  • Champions League (1): 2018-19

  • UEFA Super Cup (1): 2019

  • Club World Cup (1): 2019-20

  • Speculation surrounding Andrew Robertson's future has started to heat up, as the Scotsman is now in his 30s and has apparently been targeted by Bayern Munich as a possible replacement for Alphonso Davies.

Injuries have also plagued the former Hull City man in recent months, but a short-term extension cannot be ruled out.

    Caoimhin Kelleher

  • EFL Cup (2): 2021-22, 2023-24

  • Champions League (1): 2018-19

  • UEFA Super Cup (1): 2019

  • Despite starring in Alisson Becker's enforced absence in the 2023-24 campaign, Caoimhin Kelleher remains second choice under Slot and is pining for regular first-team football, but he was not able to secure a summer move elsewhere.

    Rhys Williams

    Age: 23

Another hero of the 2020-21 season alongside Phillips, Rhys Williams has failed to make a name for himself at Liverpool since and has endured a few disappointing spells away too; he is now on loan at Morecambe and could leave permanently in 2025.
