Jurgen Klopp: 'Liverpool ready to spend in summer'

Manager Jurgen Klopp says that Liverpool are ready to spend money in the summer transfer window, providing that the "right player" becomes available.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Liverpool are ready to spend money during the summer transfer window if they are able to sign the "right player".

Since last summer, Liverpool have spent nearly £150m, although much of that figure has been offset by the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona during the January transfer window.

A deal is already in place for Naby Keita to arrive from RB Leipzig, but Klopp has hinted that the Merseyside giants could be prepared to break their club record for the second time in less than a year having brought in Virgil van Dijk at the start of 2018.

The 50-year-old is quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying: "This club will do what we have to do, the owners are ready for that.

"Van Dijk was the sign for it but it doesn't mean we only spend in this category. We cannot say the exact numbers, I don't even know them, but was it £40m for Mohamed Salah?

"I would say that's decent money but now it looks like 'what's that?'. Everybody asks in Rome 'how can you do that?'. That's strange. When the player is the right player it is not important how expensive he was. He needs to fit in the team, that's why we paid the price for Virgil."

Liverpool currently sit in third position in the Premier League table, 18 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.
