Liverpool plan to open contract discussions with experienced forward Roberto Firmino, according to a report.

Liverpool are reportedly preparing to open contract discussions with Roberto Firmino.

The 31-year-old was linked with a move away from Anfield last summer, with the club spending big on Darwin Nunez from Benfica, and it had been thought that Firmino would struggle for football this term.

The Brazil international has again been a regular for the Reds, though, making 18 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and contributing four assists in the process.

Firmino managed two goals and one assist in six outings in the group stage of the Champions League, while he has netted six goals and registered three assists in 11 Premier League appearances.

The forward's current terms are due to expire next June, meaning that, as it stands, he would be able to hold talks with foreign clubs at the start of 2023 over a free transfer.

However, according to Football Insider, Liverpool are planning to sit down with Firmino to discuss a new deal, with the club's head coach Jurgen Klopp determined to keep hold of him.

The report claims that Klopp feels Firmino still has 'a big role to play in the coming seasons' despite the club going through a transitional period.

However, the Brazilian is allegedly likely to have to accept a wage cut in order to remain at Anfield, as the club's owners do not want to continue paying him £180,000 a week.

Firmino made the move to Liverpool in July 2015, arriving at the club off the back of scoring 49 goals and registering 36 assists in 153 appearances for Hoffenheim.

The forward has now represented the Reds on 345 occasions in all competitions, scoring 106 goals and contributing 78 assists, with the South American playing a key role in the team's recent success.

Firmino has won the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup and the Community Shield during his time at the club.

Meanwhile, he has played in three Champions League finals for the Merseyside giants.

Firmino played the full 90 minutes of Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Leeds United in the Premier League last weekend, while he featured for 87 minutes of Tuesday's 2-0 win over Napoli in the Champions League.

Klopp's side have another three matches before the campaign is halted for the World Cup, taking on Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in the Premier League, in addition to Derby County in the EFL Cup.
