Liverpool are ready to battle it out with Manchester City for the signature of Crewe Alexandra youngster Dan Smith.
The Citizens have reportedly agreed a £300,000 deal for the Alex wonderkid, but Liverpool want to snatch Smith from their rivals before any paperwork is signed, according to The Mirror.
The 16-year-old has yet to take a medical at City, who have been tracking his progress closely over the past 12 months.
Therefore Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is hoping that Smith will snub the Etihad Stadium and instead join him at Anfield.
Liverpool have a history of signing young players from Crewe, with Rob Jones and Danny Murphy two names to have previously made the switch.
