Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has come out in support of Martin Demichelis following criticism of the defender's performance in the 2-0 defeat against Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
Demichelis was sent off for bringing down Lionel Messi just inside the box, which resulted in a penalty and the opening goal for the Barcelona forward.
However, Pellegrini has hit back at those who feel that Demichelis is a weak link in City's defence.
"I think he is a very important player. He is in a very good performance for the moment. I think Vincent Kompany and him are playing well so he is a very useful player for us," Pellegrini told Sky Sports News.
Demichelis joined City from Atletico Madrid last summer.
