Micah Richards insists that footballers must work to eliminate racism from the sport.

Micah Richards has said that racism in football must not be allowed to continue following a string of recent incidents.

Richards, whose Citizens teammate Mario Balotelli was the subject of alleged racial abuse during Roberto Mancini's side's showdown with Porto this week, insists that victims must continue to take the high road and respond via the appropriate avenues.

"If people do that, it's up to them," he said of the alleged racist chants. "We'll get on with our job. It's not nice to hear. But it was great for Mario that he had a big part in the first goal.

"In English football, it's been outstanding. Since I've been playing, I've not really heard too much racism at all.

"There have been a couple of cases of late, but as long as it is sorted and dealt with in the right manner, we've just got to move forward."

The Manchester outfit are understood to have lodged a complaint with UEFA following the match.
