Speculation has gathered pace in recent weeks that Manchester City were preparing a bid in the region of £165m for the former Ballon d'Or winner.
However, according to Marca, Messi is close to signing a new deal that will see him become the highest-paid player in world football.
The 26-year-old's current deal expires in 2018.
