Kenny Dalglish has said that it is "fitting" that Steven Gerrard scored on his return to Liverpool's starting lineup against Manchester United.
The captain, who has been struggling with a groin problem, made his first start in over six months against the Red Devils and put the home side ahead through a second-half free kick.
Despite United striker Javier Hernandez's late equaliser, the Anfield boss insists that he was delighted with the midfielder's return to action.
"I thought he was everything he's been for the club, and it was fitting he got the goal," said Dalglish. "The fact we have Steven Gerrard playing is a real boost to us. It is fantastic for him he has crowned his first start for a while by scoring.
"He has made a fantastic contribution to this football club and he will continue to do that.
"To see him back was brilliant for us, but more importantly really encouraging for him. He still has a bit to go, but it was fantastic to see him starting a game and he deserves that reward of a goal."
Liverpool's next league game sees them welcome Paul Lambert's Norwich at home.
