Sir Alex Ferguson: 'I did not leave Manchester United in bad shape'

Sir Alex Ferguson hits back at claims that he left Manchester United with a poor squad when he retired from the game in 2013.

Sir Alex Ferguson has slammed claims that he left a behind a poor squad at Manchester United when he retired from the game in 2013.

The Red Devils struggled under the tenure of David Moyes, who lasted just 10 months after replacing the Scot, while Louis van Gaal has also found life difficult during his short reign at the club.

Suggestions were made that Ferguson left behind a weak squad for his successors, but he has hit back at those remarks saying that they are an "insult".

Speaking at an event in London, Ferguson said: "That's an insult. We'd just won title by 11 points.

"We'd left young players there - [Phil] Jones, [Chris] Smalling, [Danny] Welbeck. There were other players there - Van Persie, [Nemanja] Vidic, [Michael] Carrick and so on. Good players.

"[Chelsea striker Didier] Drogba is 36 and he scored at Old Trafford today. Van Persie is 32. My best signing was Carrington. The facilities there are first class."

United faced Chelsea in their Premier League clash on Sunday and they earned a point as Robin van Persie netted a stoppage-time equaliser at Old Trafford.
