Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to stop his side conceding "soft goals", and plans to do so by addressing the defence.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has outlined his intention to focus on defence in order to stop conceding "soft goals".

United have won their last two games, but were given a scare on both occasions as both Fulham and Southampton pushed them to 3-2 scorelines.

Ferguson is confident that his team can score plenty of goals, but doesn't want to rely on them having to score three in every game in order to win the match.

"We are losing soft goals at the moment," he said.

"Do we have to score three in every game to win? I don't want to go down that road. We are going to address it, as we did last year, because defending is every bit as important as the goals we are scoring.

"There are goals in our team, there is no question about that. But the other end needs balancing out."

United face Wigan on Saturday but could be without Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie as the trio struggle with injuries.
