Alex Ferguson believes that Robin van Persie "is lucky to be alive" after he was struck in the head by a ball that was kicked by Ashley Williams.

Sir Alex Ferguson has called for the Football Association to suspend Ashley Williams for a "very long time".

The Manchester United manager called for the punishment having witnessed Swansea defender Williams kick the ball at Robin van Persie's head from close range while the Dutch striker was on floor following a foul during today's 1-1 draw at the Liberty Stadium.

Discussing the incident, Ferguson insisted that Van Persie was "lucky to be alive".

"Robin van Persie is lucky to be alive," he told BBC Sport. "It was a disgraceful act from their player today and he should be banned by the FA for a very long time. Robin could have had a broken neck."

Williams himself has moved to be play down his actions by saying: "I just cleared the ball with frustration and unfortunately it hit him in the head and he got a bit angry about it. Everything got a bit heated but it was alright in the end."

The Swansea centre-back and Van Persie were both booked by referee Michael Oliver during the incident.
