Samuel Umtiti recently met with Barcelona president Joan Laporta to signal that he was determined to fight for his spot in the first team, according to a report.

Samuel Umtiti reportedly met with Barcelona president Joan Laporta last week and signalled that he was determined to fight for his spot in the first team this season.

The 27-year-old was strongly linked with a move away from Camp Nou over the summer, and it is understood that the Catalan giants were prepared to let the defender leave on a free transfer.

The window closed with Umtiti still at the club, but he has not yet been used by head coach Ronald Koeman this term and has been left out of the squad for two of their three La Liga matches at the start of 2021-22.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona attempted to move the Frenchman on over the summer, but the centre-back insisted that he wanted to fulfil his contract, which expires in June 2023.

The report claims that Umtiti has since met with Laporta to inform the club's president that he intends to fight for his position in the first team this term.

The defender, who has previously been linked with Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton, has scored twice in 132 appearances for Barcelona since making the move from Lyon in July 2016.
