Manchester United were never serious about signing Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes this summer, according to a report.

Manchester United reportedly 'never had any intention' of signing Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes during this summer's transfer window.

The 22-year-old is believed to be on the verge of signing a long-term contract with Arsenal.

A recent report claimed that United had contacted the Brazilian's representatives to discuss a potential move to Old Trafford, with the club allegedly keen to beat the Gunners to his signature.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were never serious about moving for the defender, with their name being used to 'pressure' Arsenal into a deal.

The 20-time English champions are thought to be keen to sign another centre-back as the futures of Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones continue to be called into question.

Gabriel is expected to cost Mikel Arteta's team in the region of £27m.
