Manchester United announce the permanent departure of Scott McTominay to Napoli, with the Scotland international leaving Old Trafford after seven years in the first team.

Manchester United have announced the permanent departure of Scott McTominay to Italian side Napoli.

The 27-year-old made his debut for the Old Trafford club at first-team level in 2017, when Jose Mourinho was still in charge at the Theatre of Dreams.

Since then, McTominay has gone on to become a stalwart during a difficult era on the red side of Manchester, turning out on 255 occasions for the Red Devils.

During his seven-year stint in the senior setup, the Scotland international managed a Europa League triumph in 2017, alongside FA Cup and EFL Cup successes under Erik ten Hag in recent campaigns.

McTominay enjoyed his most productive season for Man United last time out in terms of goal contributions, finding the net 10 times and providing three assists across the 2023-24 campaign.

Napoli president confirms McTominay signing

Just hours before the summer transfer window was set to close, Napoli announced the arrival of McTominay to the club, ending the player's long-term association with Man United.

It has been confirmed that the move to the Italian side for the Scotsman is a permanent one, with the 27-year-old now employed by a club other than the Red Devils for the first time in his professional career.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis broke the news to supporters on social media, posting a picture of McTominay putting pen to paper on his deal at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The 52-time international has become Napoli's second major arrival from the Premier League in the space of two days, with the Naples-based club looking set to seriously compete for the Serie A crown this term.

Napoli announced the capture of out-of-favour Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku on Thursday, with the Belgian moving on a three-year deal to Italy for a transfer fee of £26m.

Man United's remaining midfield options

Due to the departure of long-serving star McTominay, Man United are restricted in terms of options in their engine room for the 2024-25 campaign.

The Red Devils have deployed a double pivot of England international Kobbie Mainoo and Brazilian legend Casemiro during the opening two Premier League weekends.

They helped Ten Hag's troops to a 1-0 win over Fulham at Old Trafford a fortnight ago, before United were defeated 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion a week later.
