Real Madrid president Florentino Perez suggests that he was reluctant to spend big on Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar.

President Florentino Perez has defended Real Madrid's failure to sign either Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba or Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar.

Despite both players being keen to leave their respective clubs during the summer transfer window, Los Blancos opted against meeting their price-tags.

However, given that Real had spent big money on the likes of Ferland Mendy, Eden Hazard and Luka Jovic, Perez feels that the decision not to bring in more players is justified.

Perez is quoted by Marca as saying: "We have never invested so much in players even though we already had a great squad."

Real spent in the region of £275m over the summer, with Eder Militao and Rodrygo also making the switch to the Bernabeu.

Zinedine Zidane's side currently sit in fifth position in the La Liga standings.
