Inter splashed out £74million to sign the wantaway Belgium forward from United.

Arsenal completed their shock swoop for David Luiz and Romelu Lukaku left Manchester United for Inter Milan on a busy transfer deadline day.

Andy Carroll made an emotional return to Newcastle, Tottenham snapped up Ryan Sessegnon and the Gunners also landed Kieran Tierney from Celtic as summer trading in the Premier League drew to a close.

Everton ended a positive transfer window by signing Alex Iwobi from Arsenal and champions Manchester City got in on the act with a loan deal for former England goalkeeper Scott Carson.

Luiz’s move from Chelsea commanded a lot of the headlines. News of the Gunners’ interest in the 32-year-old Brazilian had come as a surprise and a deal was announced after the 5pm deadline had passed.

“David has huge experience and I look forward to working with him again,” said Gunners boss Unai Emery, who managed Luiz during a stint at Paris St Germain that split his two spells at Chelsea.

“He is a well-known player and adds to our defensive strength.”

There was another defensive addition with the capture of highly-rated left-back Tierney from the Scottish champions for a fee of £25million.

“We’re delighted Kieran is joining us,” said Emery of the 22-year-old Scotland international. “He’s a very talented player who will continue to improve.”

Lukaku’s switch to Inter, for a deal understood to worth up to £74million and on a five-year deal, ends the Belgian’s unhappy summer at United.

Lukaku, who joined United from Everton for £75million two years ago, did not feature for the club during pre-season and failed to report for training earlier this week.

The 26-year-old scored 42 goals in 96 games for United but appeared to fall out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United were linked with Juventus forward Mario Mandzukic as a potential replacement but no deal materialised.

Carroll returned to boyhood club Newcastle eight-and-a-half years after his high-profile £35million departure for Liverpool.

The 30-year-old, a free agent following his release by West Ham at the end of
last season, scored 31 goals in 80 league appearances in his first spell for the Magpies.

Carroll has been beset by injuries in recent years and Newcastle were thought to have carefully examined his medical records before offering a one-year deal.

Other business at St James’ Park saw the arrival of Sweden full-back Emil Krafth from French side Amiens for a fee in the region of £5million.

Everton signed winger Iwobi for an undisclosed fee on a five-year contract.

The Toffees were also linked with Wilfried Zaha but Crystal Palace’s prize asset stayed at Selhurst Park and a move for Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo broke down.

Spurs spent a reported £25million to land high-rated winger Sessegnon on a six-year deal from Fulham with Josh Onomah moving the other way. Midfielder Giovani Lo Celso also arrived on a season-long loan from Real Betis.

City’s deal with Derby for Carson, 33, secured experienced cover for Ederson and Claudio Bravo and also added to their quota of English players.

Further loan deals saw Aaron Mooy join Brighton from Huddersfield, fresh from signing a new deal with his parent club, and Danny Drinkwater move to Burnley from Chelsea. Muhamed Besic also joined Sheffield United from Everton.
