Robin van Persie not in contention for Manchester United captaincy?

An article on Manchester United's official website does not include Robin van Persie among the five candidates to replace Nemanja Vidic as club captain.

A report on the club's official website has suggested that Robin van Persie is not under consideration to become the new captain of Manchester United.

The armband will be available at the end of the season following the recent revelations that current skipper Nemanja Vidic would be leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer.

However, despite the fact that he has previously captained Arsenal and was given the responsibility during United's tour of the Far East and Australia last summer, 30-year-old Van Persie was not among the candidates in an article which assessed replacements for Vidic.

It's a report that could cast further doubt over the Dutch international's future with United, following suggestions that he is keen to secure a move back to the Gunners.

Instead of Van Persie, the website selected Wayne Rooney, David de Gea, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Darren Fletcher as alternative options.
