Patrick Bamford scoops Championship Player of the Year award

Patrick Bamford edges out Troy Deeney and Daryl Murphy to win the Championship Player of the Year award following his stellar season with Middlesbrough.

Patrick Bamford has scooped the Championship Player of the Year award for his contribution to promotion-chasing Middlesbrough this season.

Bamford has netted 17 times on his season-long loan from Chelsea as Boro sit third in England's second tier, one point behind leaders Watford.

The 21-year-old edged out competition from Hornets hitman Troy Deeney, who scored 20 times this season, and 24-goal Ipswich Town striker Daryl Murphy.

Preston North End marksman Joe Garner picked up the League One equivalent of the award after netting 21 times in 33 appearances for the Lilywhites, who sit second with three games left.

MK Dons sit one point behind them but, despite the prospect of missing automatic promotion, the Dons can celebrate the achievements of Dele Alli, who was crowned Football League Young Player of the Year.

Meanwhile, midfielder Danny Mayor scooped Player of the Year in League 2 for a stellar season with Bury as they chase promotion into League One via the playoffs.
