Napoli drew 0-0 with Sampdoria in this afternoon's Serie A clash, missing the opportunity to close the gap on Juventus at the top of the league.

Napoli pushed forward and pressured Sampdoria early on and had chances with Lorenzo Insigne and Marek Hamsik just missing the target with their efforts.

Edinson Cavani broke away on 13 minutes, but his strike went just wide of the mark.

Andrea Poli had the away side's first effort on goal after 22 minutes, but his shot went just wide. Mauro Icardi had a chance on 34 minutes, but Napoli's stubborn defence cleared well.

Gianluca Sansone had a chance just before half time, but Morgan De Sanctis saved well to keep the scores level.

Icardi threatened again for the away side ten minutes into the second half, though the close attention of the defenders forced his effort wide.

Pablo Armero hit back with an effort for Walter Mazzarri's side on 58 minutes, though he could not find the target with a stinging shot.

Hugo Campagnaro went close with a header on 72 minutes, but Sampdoria's defence stood firm and blocked the effort.

Napoli continued to push for the winner and Cavani came close just before the final whistle, but missed his chance.
