Newcastle United are reportedly close to completing the surprise signing of Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella.
After qualifying for the Champions League last term, Newcastle are looking to build a squad that can compete in UEFA's biggest club competition.
The Magpies are expected to make at least two elite signings this summer, and the midfield has been identified as an area that needs improving.
They are said to be leading Tottenham Hotspur in the race for James Maddison's signature, while they are also interested in Wolfsburg's Felix Nmecha.
According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are now working hard to pull off a sensational swoop for Barella, who will command a fee in the region of £50m.

The report claims that talks have been held over the last few days, and there is a belief that a deal can be reached between the two clubs.
There is still some way to go before a transfer can be agreed, but should Newcastle get the deal over the line, Barella would become the best-paid player at the club.
The former Cagliari player would add to Eddie Howe's central midfield options, which currently include Joe Willock, Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and Joelinton.
Barella, who has three years left on his current contract, has played a key role in Inter's run to the Champions League final.

The Italy international scored three goals in 11 Champions League appearances, helping his side reach the final where they were ultimately beaten 1-0 by Manchester City.
Barella featured in 52 competitive games during the 2022-23 season, scoring nine goals and providing 10 assists.
During his time with Inter, the 26-year-old has won a Serie A title, two Coppa Italia trophies and two Italian Super Cups.
Barella has been capped 43 times by Italy, and he has been included in Roberto Mancini's squad for the UEFA Nations League finals.
