Sweden score late to complete dramatic turnaround against Portugal

Sweden recover from two goals down to beat Portugal 3-2, scoring a stoppage-time winner in Madeira to inflict a second loss in 15 games on their opponents.

Sweden have battled back from two goals down to inflict a 3-2 friendly defeat on Portugal at the Estadio dos Barreiros this evening.

The only survivor for the European champions from their win over Hungary at the weekend was record scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who was always likely to start on his home island of Madeira.

Portugal looked good value for a fifth win in a row when a Ronaldo strike and a Andreas Granqvist own goal put them two to the good before the break, but Sweden turned things around and sealed the win in added time - the hosts' second loss in 15 outings.

A disjointed start to the match was perhaps expected due to the mass changes made by Fernando Santos, but Ronaldo was there to tuck away from a Gelson Martins cross 18 minutes in to put his side ahead.

Sweden were beginning to create some decent openings of their own, though, and Isaac Kiese Thelin really should have been sticking the ball in the net when picked out, only to sky over the bar from close range.

Ronaldo saw a first-time volley tipped over the bar, but moments later the second arrived as some real panic in the box led to the ball being put into his own net by Granqvist.

Portugal made four changes at the break but, rather tellingly, kept Ronaldo on, though the second half belonged to the visitors as Viktor Claesson clinically finished to pull one back.

Claesson did not have to wait too much longer for a second, this time improvising from a corner that the hosts should have defended better from, and there was more drama to come late on in Madeira.

From essentially the final act of the game, with Ronaldo long off the pitch to a rapturous applause, Sweden attacked down the left and sent in a dangerous cross, which Joao Cancelo this time carelessly directed into his own net to end a night of experimentation for the hosts on a downer.
