Reading overcome Ipswich Town

A Danny Guthrie strike gives Reading a 2-1 win against Ipswich Town in the Championship.

A second-half strike from Danny Guthrie has given Reading a 2-1 win against Ipswich Town in the Championship.

The Royals started the better of the two teams as Royston Drenthe whipped in an early cross, but no-one could get on the end of it.

With Ipswich struggling to get into the game, the Dutch winger then had a shot blocked.

However, former Reading player Jay Tabb then gave the away side the lead when he was left unmarked at the back post to score at the second attempt.

The Tractor Boys could have added to their lead but Daryl Murphy failed to connect with a Tommy Smith knockdown.

Just a few minutes before the half-time whistle the hosts were level. Garath McCleary sent in a cross and Adam Le Fondre rose highest to head home.

After the break, both teams came out in attacking mode. Tabb went very close to adding to his account but after escaping the attention of Alex Pearce, he dragged his shot just past the post.

Reading were soon up the other end and almost took the lead, but Hal-Robson Kanu's backh eel from a Drenthe cross rolled wide.

In an end-to-end match, it was Town who threatened next. David McGoldrick failed to connect with a Murphy cross, before he forced Alex McCarthy into a great save with a shot from the edge of the box.

The Royals edged in front thanks to a 25-yard shot from Guthrie, which took a slight deflection on its way past Scott Loach in the Town goal.

Ipswich had a chance to equalise but Paul Anderson's header was held by McCarthy as Reading closed the game out.
