Villarreal currently sit top of the La Liga table as the Yellow Submarine continued their excellent start to the new campaign with victory over Atletico Madrid at El Madrigal on Saturday evening.
Leo Baptistao's first-half goal saw Marcelino's side collect all three points against Atletico, moving them onto 16 points for the season, one ahead of Barcelona, whose 2-1 victory over Las Palmas on Saturday afternoon came with a hefty price.
A double from Luis Suarez saw the Catalan outfit get over the line at Camp Nou, but a serious knee injury to Lionel Messi put a shadow over their fifth league win of the season.
Real Madrid had the chance to move above Barcelona into second in Saturday's second match, but despite having over 30 attempts against Malaga, Los Blancos were held to a 0-0 draw at the Bernabeu.

The Basque derby concluded the week's action on Sunday evening, but it was a fairly uninspiring clash at the Anoeta, with Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao sharing the points in a goalless draw.

Carlos Kameni (Malaga)
When opposing teams stop Real Madrid from winning at the Bernabeu, they almost always need a top performance from their goalkeeper. Well, that was no different on Saturday, with Malaga's Cameroonian stopper putting in a quite stunning display against Los Blancos. Kameni won his personal battle with Cristiano Ronaldo as he made a whole host of top-drawer saves in Madrid.
Marcos Angeleri (Malaga)
Ronaldo must have thought that he had scored early in the second half of Real Madrid's clash with Malaga on Saturday, but Angeleri had other ideas. The Malaga defender came from nowhere to make a sensational goal-line clearance and that piece of action summed up his performance. To a man, Malaga's back four were excellent at the Bernabeu, but Angeleri was just a cut above.
Aymeric Laporte (Athletic Bilbao)
It has been a disappointing start to the new season for Bilbao, who have won just one of their first six league games. A welcome point did arrive at Sociedad on Sunday, however, in a game that was dominated by both defences. Laporte was the standout player on the field, with the 21-year-old reading a number of dangerous situations and making a whole host of vital clearances.
Shkodran Mustafi (Valencia)
Valencia are another team that are just struggling to find their best form in the early part of the season, but they recorded a much-needed win over Granada on Friday. It was Mustafi that secured Los Che all three points, with his 26th-minute effort enough to record a 1-0 victory. The German was also excellent at the back, especially when Granada upped their performance in the second period.
Eric Bailly (Villarreal)
Villarreal's excellent start has been one of the stories of the new season and Saturday's 1-0 win over Atletico moved them to the top of the table. After falling behind, the expected response from Atletico did arrive, but the hosts were dominant at the back. The real standout performer was Bailly, who used all of his power and pace to put out a number of fires throughout the match.
Recio (Malaga)
While Malaga needed an excellent rear-guard performance at the Bernabeu on Saturday, they also had opportunities of their own to win the match. It was Recio that twice came close to scoring, but the midfielder headed at Keylor Navas before bringing an excellent second-half save from the Real stopper. It was a really energetic performance from Recio, who was everywhere for his team.
Bruno (Villarreal)
Beating Atletico is always a tough task, but Villarreal were deserved winners against Diego Simeone's side on Saturday. Both teams had to get through a lot of running, but it was Bruno that controlled the game from a central position. The 31-year-old never looked in danger of losing focus and hardly put a foot wrong at El Madrigal. It was a real captain's performance from the veteran.
Lucas Perez (Deportivo La Coruna)
Deportivo's excellent start to the new season continued on Sunday as they comfortably beat Espanyol 3-0 in La Coruna. It was a real team performance from the hosts, but Perez really made the difference. The Spaniard scored Depor's second in the 27th minute, before adding a third just after the break. Espanyol simply could not deal with the 27-year-old's movement.
Luis Suarez (Barcelona)
Messi's first-half injury put a shadow over Barcelona's 2-1 win over Las Palmas on Saturday, but it was still vital that the Catalan outfit recorded all three points. It was an untidy performance from Luis Enrique's team, but a double from Suarez secured the win. The striker's first was a close-range header and he added a second with a smart finish just after the interval.
Ruben Castro (Real Betis)
Castro has netted more than 100 league goals for Betis since 2010 and he will remain a key player for the Green and Whites this season. Betis fell behind at Sporting Gijon on Sunday, but their 34-year-old striker inspired them to all three points. Castro set up Joaquin for the equaliser in the 46th minute of the contest, before scoring what proved to be the winner 11 minutes later.
Alvaro Vasquez (Getafe)
Getafe and Levante played out a fairly dull 80 minutes in Madrid on Sunday, but the match burst into life late on. Vasquez was only given the final 15 minutes to make his mark, but it was more than enough time. The Spaniard scored twice in the latter stages and also set up fellow substitute Emiliano Buendia as Getafe somehow ran out 3-0 winners. It was an incredible cameo performance.
