Two goals from Gonzalo Higuain helps Real Madrid restore their 10-point lead at the top of La Liga with a 5-0 thrashing of Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid have restored their 10-point lead at the top of La Liga with a convincing 5-0 win at home to Espanyol.

The hosts made the breakthrough on 24 minutes when Cristiano Ronaldo slotted into the far corner with his left foot.

It was 2-0 before the break as Sami Khedira was allowed to fire past the goalkeeper from Mesut Ozil's pass.

It took Madrid just two minutes after the restart to extend their lead when Gonzalo Higuain swept in from close range following another incisive passing move from the home side.

Kaka rolled back the years just after the hour as he stroked the ball into the net from the angle to make it 4-0.

The rout was completed in the 77th minute thanks to Higuain's precise that found the top corner.
