Richard Dunne says that his comeback match in football couldn't "have gone more perfectly" after the Republic of Ireland's win over Georgia.

Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne believes that his comeback appearance against Georgia was perfect after a year out of the game.

The 33-year-old, who missed the entire Premier League season with Aston Villa due to a number of injuries that required three separate surgeries, hadn't played since Euro 2012.

However, Dunne, who is out of contract at Villa Park this summer, hopes that his performance in the 4-0 win can help him attract a deal from other clubs.

"Ideally, you would try to play games behind closed doors and stuff like that, but as games go, I don't think it could have gone more perfectly than today," Dunne told Sky Sports News.

"It was ideal. It was what I wanted, just the confidence to know that I can compete and more so, the week's training has been as hard as the game was.

"It was important for me just to clear my mind of what has gone on in the last year, and I feel now that I can progress and play again for a couple of years."

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni has admitted that there is a chance that Dunne could play in the World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands on Friday.
