Russia sack Fabio Capello

Fabio Capello is sacked as Russia head coach after three years in charge.

Fabio Capello has been sacked from his position as Russia head coach.

The former England manager took charge of the Sbornaya in 2012 but had been under pressure recently following a string of poor results.

The 68-year-old Italian took Russia to their first World Cup finals for 12 years in 2014 but they were knocked out in the group stage after failing to win a match.

Capello signed a new three-year deal in 2014 which would have taken him through to Russia's home World Cup in 2018.

"The Russian Football Union and the head coach of the national team Fabio Capello have mutually agree to terminate his employment agreement," the union said in a statement on its official website.

Russia currently lie third in Group G of Euro 2016 qualifying after winning two of their six games so far.
