Wolverhampton Wanderers tear Sheffield Wednesday apart

Wolverhampton Wanderers thrash Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 in Tuesday evening's Championship clash at Molineux.

There was action from the off as both sides probed forward in a bid to strike an early opener, Benik Afobe firing just wide from a corner seven minutes in.

The Owls countered moments later as Chris Maguire tried an effort from 25 yards out, but his slip as he lined up his shot caused the ball to soar way off target.

Wolves were given a great chance to take the lead when Nouha Dicko was tripped in the box by Claude Dielna, prompting the referee to give a penalty.

Bakary Sako stepped up and duly sent Keiren Westwood the wrong way from the spot to put his side a goal to the good.

The action continued to come following the opener as the Wolves front line continued to pepper the Owls area, while at the other end Lewis McGugan dragged a low effort wide.

Wednesday then came within a whisker of equalising when Jacques Maghoma's header in the 36th minute was only thwarted by a superb Tomasz Kuszczak save.

They would rue that missed opportunity because, five minutes before the hour, Matt Doherty charged down the right before sending a cross in the box that was met on the volley 15 yards out by Afobe.

The ball hit the inside of the post and floated into the opposite corner for the former Arsenal man's 27th goal of the season.

Wolves then went on to kill the game off in the 68th minute when Doherty marauded into the Owls' final third and found James Henry, who charged forward and fired into the top corner from range.
