Jose Fonte 'relieved' after Southampton hit six past Aston Villa

Southampton captain Jose Fonte admits that he was 'relieved' after he and his teammates sealed a thumping 6-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Southampton captain Jose Fonte has admitted that the overriding feeling after beating Aston Villa was "relief".

Ronald Koeman's side ended a run of four Premier League games without a win with a convincing 6-1 thumping of Tim Sherwood's side at St Mary's on Saturday.

"It was kind of a relief because obviously being the last game of the season we wanted to put a performance for the fans, the sun was out and we were saying before the game let's put a performance in, let's give something to cheer for the fans and let's get the three points and start fast, and that's what we did," the Daily Echo quotes Fonte as saying.

The Saints' final game of the season is away to Manchester City on May 24.
