Mousa Dembele charged with violent conduct following eye gouge

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele is charged with violent conduct by the FA after eye-gouging Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele has been charged with an alleged act of violent conduct after appearing to eye gouge Chelsea striker Diego Costa during Monday night's Premier League match.

The incident was missed by referee Mark Clattenburg and the other match officials during the ill-tempered 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

However, TV footage appeared to show Dembele clawing his fingers down Costa's face in a mass brawl during the heated fixture between the London rivals.

The FA has now opted to charge the midfielder, who could reportedly face a 10-game ban for his actions.

A statement from the English governing body read: "It is alleged the player's behaviour constituted violent conduct in circumstances where the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient."

In addition, both Tottenham and Chelsea have been charged with failing to control their players during the match, which ended with a melee in the tunnel.

The FA statement read: "Both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have been charged for three breaches of FA Rule E20 for failing to control their players and/or officials. It follows incidents which occurred in the 45th and 87th minutes and also at the end of the game at Stamford Bridge on Monday night. Both clubs have until 6pm on Monday May 9, 2016 to respond to their charge."

Dembele has until 6pm on Thursday, May 5 to respond to his individual charge.
