Sam Allardyce urges Sunderland players to 'control emotions' in derby

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce hopes to control his players' emotions in this Sunday's Wear-Tyne derby.

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has claimed that he will try to keep his players' emotions in check for this Sunday's Wear-Tyne derby against Newcastle United.

The Black Cats can seal a sixth consecutive win over their local rivals this weekend in Allardyce's second match in charge since being appointed as Dick Advocaat's successor a fortnight ago.

"Hopefully we can evolve as a backroom team and help the players on the pitch," Allardyce told reporters in today's press conference. "My job is to remind the players of the importance of the game and control their emotions. Hopefully they can achieve what they have before - an outstanding victory."

Allardyce's first Sunderland match ended in a 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion.
