Adam Johnson: 'England caps will be handed to players from top teams'

Adam Johnson believes that players from the top eight clubs in the Premier League will always be given the most chances to play for England.

Adam Johnson has claimed that it is unlikely he will be given a chance to impress for England due to Sunderland's position in the Premier League.

The former Manchester City winger believes that certain players are being given opportunities ahead of others because they are with one of the top eight clubs in the country.

"I think that says a lot about the selection. I don't think it really matters how well you're playing, it's who you play for," Johnson told reporters.

"It's a fact isn't it? If you look at the last 10 squads - Southampton have been playing well, they're in the top eight and the rest are Everton, Tottenham, Man United, Man City, clubs like that.

"Some of the players, if they weren't playing for the big clubs, wouldn't be anywhere near it."

Johnson hasn't been named in an England squad since 2012.
