Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has expressed his delight at Fraizer Campbell's first call-up to the senior England squad.
The striker was named in interim manager Stuart Pearce's 25-man party for Wednesday's friendly against the Netherlands at Wembley Stadium.
"There are some terrific players there and getting a place in the squad is extremely difficult," O'Neill told the club's official website.
"It's a boost, even just to be involved for a few days. It's fantastic. Whether he does or doesn't play, to me, is immaterial at this stage.
"I think it would have been a bit of a surprise for him. If he gets the opportunity it would be great to take it."
Campbell has scored two goals in five games for the Black Cats this season following a lengthy absence through injury.
