John O'Shea elated with "historic" Wear-Tyne derby victory

Sunderland defender John O'Shea believes that his side's win over Newcastle United is a huge moment in the club's history as well as their battle against relegation.

Sunderland captain John O'Shea has claimed that his side's 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Wear-Tyne derby is a "historic moment" for the club.

The Black Cats secured their fifth victory over the Tynesiders in a row as they defeated John Carver's men at the Stadium of Light thanks to Jermain Defoe's strike just before half time.

"The performance was great but ultimately, like the manager said beforehand, today was about the three points," O'Shea told the club's official website.

"We've been watching the results come in all weekend trying to focus on our preparation for today's game, and thankfully we did that and we executed the plan perfectly.

"The job isn't finished yet and there is a lot more work to do, but it was a step in the right direction and it is great to be able to take this momentum into next weekend's game against Crystal Palace. To win five derbies in a row is very special and it was a historic moment for the club, so to be part of that was absolute fantastic."

Dick Advocaat's men moved three points clear of the relegation zone into 15th place in the Premier League as a result of their win against the Magpies.
