Gus Poyet: 'Sunderland's recent run is a miracle'

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet hails the effort of his team as a "miracle" after a string of good results against Manchester City, Cardiff City, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has hailed his side's recent recovery as a "miracle" after picking up 10 points from a possible 12 in games against Manchester City, Chelsea, Cardiff City and Manchester United.

The Black Cats' win against United means that Sunderland need only one point from home matches against West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City to avoid relegation if Chelsea beat Norwich City on Sunday.

Poyet told reporters: "This is close to a miracle. A miracle was the word I used a few weeks ago and apparently every now and again it happens.

"We thought we would have to win four matches after losing to Everton (on April 12). We won three and if we win one (more) we are over the line. Chelsea could help us tomorrow. I don't know if I will be able to watch.

"What we have done in the last four games is unique. It is special, incredible."

Sunderland's win at Old Trafford was their first there for almost half a century.
