Federico Fernandez: 'We need a miracle'

Swansea City captain Federico Fernandez says that only "a miracle" will prevent his team from being relegated from the Premier League this season.

Swansea City captain Federico Fernandez has conceded that only "a miracle" will prevent his team from being relegated from the Premier League this season.

Tuesday's 1-0 home defeat to Southampton has left the Swans in 18th position in the Premier League table - three points off 17th-placed Huddersfield Town, who have a game in hand.

Swansea must beat Stoke City on Sunday afternoon to stand any chance of escaping the bottom three, but even then other results would have to go their way, and Fernandez has claimed that the Welsh outfit have 'lost their chance'.

"It is bitterly disappointing, absolutely. We know we lost our chance. It doesn't depend on us now - and we are waiting for a miracle," Fernandez told Sky Sports News.

"We have to win our last game, but we are waiting on other results also. A lot of things have gone wrong. We can't win the games, we have had chances to take points before this game and we didn't.

"Overall, the season has been up and down, a struggle for us. When we don't score it's difficult and we lose confidence. We tried on the pitch and we have one more game to finish properly. We will try to get three points and we will see what happens."

Swansea are without a Premier League win since the start of March, which is a run that stretches back eight matches.
