Preview: Tottenham Hotspur Ladies vs. Liverpool Women - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Women's Super League clash between Tottenham Hotspur Ladies and Liverpool Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two sides level on 10 points will face off on Sunday when Tottenham Hotspur Ladies play host to Liverpool Women.

The hosts will look to extend their five-game unbeaten run in all competitions, while the Reds will try to produce a response following their League Cup defeat to Manchester City.

Match preview

Robert Vilahamn, who was appointed Tottenham boss in the summer, has made a positive impact since arriving in North London, having seen his side win four, draw one and lose one of their six competitive games.

After losing to Chelsea in his first game in charge, Vilahamn oversaw four consecutive victories, three of which took place in the WSL.

Tottenham looked on course to continue their winning run last weekend when Grace Clinton opened the scoring in their home meeting with Everton, but an 85th-minute penalty from Aurora Galli ensured that Spurs had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Despite missing out on a win last weekend, Tottenham will still be pleased to be sitting in third position with three points separating them from the top of the table.

Having won their last three competitive home games against Liverpool, the hosts will be confident about their chances of claiming maximum points on Sunday.

With goal difference keeping them behind their opponents, fourth-placed Liverpool will be looking to leapfrog Spurs with a victory this weekend.

The Reds began their league campaign with consecutive wins, before they were stopped in their tracks by a narrow defeat to Merseyside rivals Everton.

After going on to play out a 1-1 draw with West Ham United, the Reds returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Leicester City last weekend thanks to goals from Melissa Lawley and Marie Hobinger.

Although they have enjoyed success in the WSL, Matt Beard's side have lost their opening two group games in the League Cup, including Wednesday's home meeting with Manchester City, where they squandered a 2-1 lead to lose 4-3 at Prenton Park.

Liverpool will now turn their focus to Sunday's league match, and although they have struggled in recent away games against Spurs, they claimed a 2-1 home victory when the two sides last met in March.

Team News

Tottenham Hotspur Women's Martha Thomas celebrates scoring their first goal with teammates on October 1, 2023© Reuters

Tottenham have reported no fresh injury concerns, although they remain without the services of captain Bethany England, who continues her recovery from hip surgery.

Spurs received a boost last weekend after Ellie Brazil returned to the matchday squad last weekend following more than a year on the sidelines due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Despite having to settle for a draw against Everton, Vilahamn could be tempted to select an unchanged starting lineup for the weekend.

As for the visitors, Emma Koivisto is closing in on a return from a hamstring injury, but it remains to be seen whether she will recover in time for the weekend.

Leanne Kiernan made her comeback from injury as a late substitute in Wednesday's League Cup game, but Beard has stated that she is a "couple of weeks away" from being ready for WSL action.

Gemma Bonner broke the Liverpool Women's appearance record in midweek after making her 135th appearance for the club, and she will add to that tally if she features in the backline on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies possible starting lineup:
Spencer; James, Buhler, Bartrip, Neville; Ahtinen, Spence, Summanen; Bizet, Clinton, Thomas

Liverpool Women possible starting lineup:
Laws; Clark, Bonner, Matthews; Fisk, Nagano, Hobinger, Hinds; Kearns, Lawley, Haug

We say: Tottenham Hotspur Ladies 2-1 Liverpool Women

Liverpool have already beaten one North London side this season after claiming a 1-0 victory over Arsenal on the opening day of the season.

However, we think that they may be left disappointed on this occasion because we believe that Spurs will claim all three points after winning four of their last five competitive games.
