Sir Ian Botham says that he "can't understand" why Gary Speed would choose to take his own life.

Former England cricket captain Sir Ian Botham believes that there were no signs to indicate Gary Speed's impending apparent suicide.

The 42-year-old was found hanged at his home in Cheshire yesterday morning.

"I just can't understand it," Botham told Sky Sports News. "I was with him only a few weeks ago, he was in great nick, we were playing golf. He was enjoying himself, Wales are playing well, and everything seemed to be going well.

"It just goes to show we never quite know what goes on. Maybe the pressure got to him, I haven't got a clue."

Many figures in the world of football paid tribute to the Leeds United legend yesterday.
