Troy Deeney 'never doubted himself'

Troy Deeney says that he knew that he would start scoring in the Premier League and backs his own ability to shine in the top flight.

Watford striker Troy Deeney has said that he never doubted that he would adapt to Premier League football after scoring his first top-flight goal in the win over Stoke City on Saturday.

Deeney opened the scoring two minutes before half time as the Hornets secured a 2-0 win at the Britannia Stadium to record their third victory of the season and climb to 13th in the table.

The 27-year-old scored 75 goals over the last four seasons in the Championship, and despite taking 10 games to get off the mark after the club's promotion he revealed that he was always confident that he would start hitting the net again.

Asked whether thought that he could make the step up, he told The Mirror: "Yes, that's why Premier League teams have wanted to buy me for the last three years. I'm good.

"If I wasn't playing and wasn't getting picked then I would definitely be questioning myself, but I have been playing really well and setting up goals.

"I always said that [the first goal] would come. If I am honest I didn't want it to take this long but it did. I will just work hard every game and as long as the team is doing well and I am in it, it is happy days."

Next up for Deeney's side is the visit of in-form West Ham United to Vicarage Road next Saturday.
