Watford, Charlton Athletic end in draw

Watford and Charlton Athletic share the spoils at Vicarage Road in the Championship.

Watford and Charlton Athletic have played out a 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road in the Championship.

In what proved to be a relatively low-key first half, the hosts had the first chance after just two minutes when Fernando Forestieri took a shot on goal but failed to keep it on target.

The Watford striker had another crack on goal in the 17th minute, but once again could not keep his attempt on target.

Charlton's first meaningful attempt came on the half-hour mark when Simon Church headed Lawrie Wilson's cross towards the home side's goal, but keeper Manuel Almunia made an easy save.

Marco Cassetti had one final chance before the break for Gianfranco Zola's team on 38 minutes, but his right-footed shot went wide.

The complexion of the game changed inside the opening two minutes of the second half as Charlton were awarded a penalty.

Essaid Belkalem brought down Wilson inside the 18-yard box and Yann Kermorgant made no mistake from the spot.

Lewis McGugan went close to restoring parity in the 53rd minute but failed to hit the target, before Dale Stephens tested Almunia just after the hour mark.

However, the Addicks were forced to settle for a point as Watford equalised on 71 minutes through Daniel Pudil's right-footed effort.
